Kano govt. to Pay ₦15.6 Billion Severance Benefits to Former Councillors

The Kano State Government has approved the payment of ₦15.6 billion as outstanding severance gratuity and allowances for former councillors who served between 2014 and 2024, in what officials describe as a historic move to fulfill long-standing obligations.
The decision was reached during the 27th Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday, 28th April 2025.
In a statement by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa the governor’s spokesperson, the Council’s approval reflects the administration’s commitment to justice, inclusivity, and the welfare of public servants who contributed to grassroots governance.
“This government believes that those who served the people deserve their due rewards. We are setting a new standard of accountability and welfare in public service,”
The initiative is expected to provide much-needed relief to hundreds of former councillors across the 44 local government areas of the state, many of whom had waited years for their entitlements.
